Dump truck driver arrested after allegedly pulling down power lines, driving off

DRAPER — A dump truck driver has been arrested after police say he caused a power outage Wednesday and drove away.

Kevin Frank Kilpack, 60, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of causing economic interruption and failing to comply with the duties of a driver.

At about 1:30 p.m., Draper police were called to an accident near 800 East and 12300 South.

“Witnesses stated that a white dump truck with a black lift forgot to put down its lift gate while driving west onto 12300 South. Witnesses stated that the driver approached 800 East where power lines were located. The vehicle then got caught in the power lines, causing them to break and pull the power poles down as well. The driver then continued and failed to remain at the scene of the accident,” a police booking affidavit alleges.

Using video from witnesses, investigators were able to identify and locate Kilpack and arrest him.

A total of three power poles were pulled down. Drivers were asked to avoid the area between 265 West and 900 East on 12300 South for most of the afternoon and evening due to traffic signals being out, while the section between 700 East and 900 East was closed entirely to all traffic as crews cleaned up the downed lines and poles.

The city announced power had been restored to the area 10 hours later, at 11:30 p.m.
