Bristol Old Vic’s youth theatre celebrates 30th birthday

One of the largest youth theatre companies is celebrating its 30th birthday.

Bristol Old Vic Young Company was set up in 1994 to provide access to drama for children.

Famous alumni include Bristol comedian Jayde Adams and actors Hannah Murray, Joe Sims and April Pearson.

Last year, around 21,000 people took part in activities run by the company and bosses believe “everyone should get an opportunity” to explore a career in theatre.

The company was set up by directors Heather Williams and Sally Cookson.

It usually produces at least two shows per year, and many alumni of the company go on to professional roles within the theatre.

Engagement director, Lucy Hunt said more than 300 young people take part in their activities each week.

She said the company will go “anywhere where we know there are kids” including schools and youth clubs to reach as many future participants as possible.

The programme has acted as a springboard for the careers of actors in the city.

Alumni Joseph Langdon credits the company with giving him “lots of opportunities” when he was starting out.

“I can’t imagine where my life would be without meeting BOV Young Company”, he said.

He said he wanted would-be actors from diverse backgrounds to consider a career on stage.

He said there is “no failure in theatre” and that young people can “be free”.
