Mozingo hot streak not enough for Utah Royals in 3-2 Louisville loss

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Brecken Mozingo can’t stop scoring goals.

The Sandy native and Alta alum became the first Utah Royals player since the team’s return to the NWSL last year to score three goals in three consecutive games Friday against Racing Louisville.

The only players to accomplish the feat in the Royals’ previous iteration were USWNT stars Christen Press and Amy Rodriguez.

All three of Mozingo’s goals have come in the first 15 minutes of the match, with Friday’s being her fastest yet in just the third minute after an hour-long weather delay in Louisville.

The home team fired back with an equalizer from Emma Sears in the ninth minute, and the score was up to 2-2 by the 31st minute with goals from Ellie Jean for Louisville and Bianca St-Georges for the Royals.

Mozingo and St-Georges now own the top two spots on the Utah goals leaderboard with three and two, respectively.

“It’s been hard to score (this season),” St-Georges said. “So to have Brecken come in and show up scoring three goals now is perfect, because we need goals, and we want to keep that momentum going. We should keep encouraging her and let her know that it’s awesome.

“What I like about this team, too, is that a lot of people can score,” St-Georges continued. “We have many people that can come in, so we’re not relying on just one player showing up. I think everyone’s playing a role here.”

Ally Sentnor nearly had a third goal for Utah, fresh off her brace with the USWNT, but the shot deflected off the keeper’s hands, into the far post, and then back toward the keeper in a stroke of bad luck.

Ana Tejada was ejected from the match in the 73rd minute on a second yellow and Louisville took advantage by hounding Utah goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn, who put up another impressive performance with six saves. The home side broke through in the 85th minute with the game-winner from Sarah Weber to seal a 3-2 victory.

It was the first goal scored after the 70th minute for Louisville this season and the fifth conceded by Utah in the 75th minute or later in 2025 so far.

“I think shifting our mentality just a little bit (will help), and when we are getting tired, playing simpler instead of trying to overcomplicate things,” Sentnor said of the late-game foibles. “I think if we can just keep the ball and keep the other team running, I think that will help us later into games.”

The loss hands Utah its eighth loss in the opening 11 matches of the season and extends its winless streak to six games with two matches remaining before the NWSL midseason break in July.

The Royals finish the first half of the season with a pair of home matches at America First Field against Gotham FC on Friday, June 13, and Seattle Reign on Saturday, June 21.
