TOOELE — A 27-year-old man was arrested Friday and accused of intentionally bumping a Tesla on the freeway while driving over 100 mph.
Oscar Fayani was booked into the Tooele County Jail for investigation of aggravated assault, reckless driving and driving on a suspended license. All of the counts come with road rage penalty enhancements if convicted. He was also arrested for investigation of possession of drug paraphernalia.
Just after 10 a.m., the Utah Highway Patrol was asked to be on the lookout for a “reckless driver” on westbound I-80 near Tooele.
“A gold sedan was unable to maintain its lane and was not allowing people to pass,” a police booking affidavit states. “A second caller reported the vehicle doing similar things, then observed the gold sedan road raging with a black Tesla. This witness reported the vehicles going 115-120 mph.”
When troopers stopped and questioned the Tesla driver, the driver said the gold car drove into him “on purpose to push it off of the roadway. According to other witnesses … the Tesla driver was attempting to get away from the gold sedan who started to follow him,” the affidavit states.
“The (Tesla) driver admitted to driving over 100 mph and that the gold sedan was still following him. He stated he was attempting to get away from the suspect vehicle. He stated he attempted to exit, wait a few minutes and get back on the freeway. He stated that after he got back on the freeway the gold sedan was waiting for him. The driver stated that the suspect intentionally tried to push into his lane and push him off of the roadway,” according to the affidavit.
Other witnesses told troopers that the car was in the left lane going 55 mph and that “as other vehicles attempted to pass the gold sedan, the suspect vehicle pulled back in front of them, cutting them off and causing a near-miss-accident,” according to the arrest report.
One driver told troopers he sped up to 95 mph to try and get away from the sedan after passing it, but it “started to speed up and tailgated him extremely close.”
Troopers spotted the sedan and pulled it over near the Great Saltair. It was discovered the driver, Fayani, had a suspended license, the affidavit says. He was arrested and his car impounded and searched.
“During the inventory, under the back seat cushion … two small baggies with residue of a white powdery substance, consistent with meth or cocaine or similar drug use (were found),” troopers wrote, while noting the powder later tested positive for cocaine. “There was a ‘roller’ in the center console, consistent with use for rolling marijuana joint, with residue on it.”
